Reception

Welcome to Reception!
Thursday 8th July 2021
Reception have had a fantastic week for STEAM week!
Challenge 1 - We measured ourselves to work out how long our golf club needed to be. We measured in non-standard units of measure, as well as using a tape measure.
Challenge 2 - We created crazy golf courses. Mrs Nealings enjoyed playing our mini golf games!
Challenge 3 - We tested different materials to work out which would be best for our golf club handle. We thought about which had more grip, which would be comfortable, which would be waterproof!
Challenge 4 - How could we improve our aim? We practiced on the field aiming at hoops. The children then added different elements to their golf club to help make their aim more accurate e.g. magnifying glasses and compasses!
We were excited to pitch our new golf club idea! We can't wait to find out who the winners and losers are!

Check out the STEAM WEEK 2021 tab on the website to see what the whole school have been up to! Plus the winners and losers!

Have a lovely weekend!

Reception have had a great week. We have read the twisted tale 'The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig'. We created our own characters for our own twisted tale and thought about what the houses would be made of for our characters. The children have written beautiful stories using their phonic knowledge and tricky words! Amazing work!
In maths, we have consolidated our measuring skills. Weighing different objects to compare which were heavier and which were lighter. We looked at capacity and volume, and experimented with a range of containers.
We began our preparations for Olympic STEAM week! We had a very exciting visit from the Queen!

Enjoy the weekend!

Thursday 24th June 2021
We have had an enjoyable week in school starting our new class text 'The Three Little Pigs' and re-writing the story ourselves using our super phonic knowledge!. We compared it to the twisted tale, 'The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig'. The children have thought about what characters they would have in their own twisted tale. We can't wait to write our own story!
The children thought about different materials that would work well for a little pigs house and protect them from the big bad wolf!
We have been busy practicing our doubling and halving skills using a range of resources, as well as beginning to count in 2s and 10s! Keep practicing!

Have a great weekend!

Friday 11th June 2021
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful half term and enjoyed the sunshine!
We have had a fantastic first week back at school. The children have been full of enthusiasm and ready to learn!
We have started our first topic - 'Look What I Can Do!', thinking about our bodies, what they can do and how we can look after them. We explored our 5 senses (smell, sight, taste, hearing and touch) on our senses walk and thought about how our senses help us to know we are now in Summer!
We have learnt about poems and how they don't always have to rhyme. We created our own list poem using our senses to describe summer, I see.. I smell... I hear... I taste ... I touch..

In maths, we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We reminded ourselves that 2D shapes are flat and 3D shapes are solid. We began to explore the properties of shapes by using the words corners, sides, vertices, edges, faces as well as thinking about straight and curved sides. Ask your child to tell you what they know about shapes! Can you see any different shapes at home? How do you know it's that shape?

Enjoy the weekend!

Reception had a fab last week of term creating their inventions using box modelling and a range of objects! The children carefully drew and labelled their design, and explained what their invention could do. We then looked at instructions and how to make sure we write clear and effective instructions. The children then wrote their own 'How to make a robot' instructions using time openers - First, then, next, after that, finally.
We have been amazing at learning our number bonds to 10 and applying this knowledge to solve problems! The children can identify the addition and subtraction bonds for 10 to make the fact family e.g.
3 + 7 = 10
7 + 3 = 1 0
10 - 3 = 7
10 - 7 = 10
We began our new RE topic 'friends' and thought about what makes a good friend and how we should be kind and compliment our friends. The children made friendship cards for each other and thought about how to show our friends how special they are.

I hope you have a fabulous half term!
See you on Tuesday 8th June.

Reception have had a lovely week watching the forever changing weather! Some of our beans have really started to grow and we have loved comparing the different heights!
We have continued to learn about jobs and think about what we would like to be when we are older. The children have learnt about the inventor Thomas Edison who created the lightbulb, motion pictures and sound recordings! We have thought about the impact that has had on the world today and how strange it would be if we didn't have any lightbulbs!
We held our class worship on Wednesday to mark the end of our topic 'Good News' where we have learnt about Pentecost. The children understood that Jesus went to heaven and that God sent us The Holy Spirit just as he had promised. The children have been busy spreading good news and creating fire sticks and flames to represent The Holy Spirit.
We have also learnt about road safety, the importance of staying on the pavement, being with an adult, only crossing when there is a green man and to always wear a helmet when riding a bike or scooter.
